During a crisis, every second counts. To help ensure 911 operators can pinpoint a caller's exact location, Congress enacted Kari's Law and the Ray Baum Act.
9Line's Enterprise 911 Checklist
To ensure compliance with both Kari's Law and Ray Baum, your enterprise phone system must:
1. Allow users to dial 911 directly without dialing a digit for an outside line (Kari's Law, effective February 16, 2020).
2. Notify on-site staff when a 911 call is placed and report the exact location of the call's origin (Kari's Law).
3. Provide a valid callback number that connects the 911 operator directly with the person who placed the emergency call (Kari's Law).
4. Provide dispatchable location information (street address plus building, floor number, office or room number) for all phones within your office (Ray Baum Act, effective January 6, 2021).
5. Provide dispatchable location information for remote or nomadic workers who call 911 using their company phone (Ray Baum Act, effective January 6, 2022).
Best Practices
Lock the wiring closet. Once phones are mapped, prevent unauthorized changes to network cabling. Update company signage to reflect the same location names sent to 911 operators. Regularly test your system to ensure calls route correctly.
